[Windows 8] How to customize the clock on Lock screen

With the goal of being a hybrid desktop-mobile operating system, Windows 8 contains many elements that are in smartphones. Windows 8’s Lock screen is one of them. You may already know How to customize the Lock screen with your own background and know to manage notifications in the Lock screen. In this article, I will show you how to make your Lock screen even more different by changing its clock to your own style.

HOW TO CHANGE THE CLOCK ON THE LOCK SCREEN

Changing Lock screen’s clock involves Registry so that you need to make sure that you had your Registry backed up. Then follow these steps.
  •  Open Registry Editor by pressing Windows key then type “regedit” (without the quotes) and choose “regedit.exe” result on the left. If you are using a table, you should wipe from the right screen edge, select “Search” then type “regedit” and choose “regedit.exe” result.
  • In Registry Editor window, you have to navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ SystemProtectedUserData\S-1-5-21-[unique ID]\ AnyoneRead\LocaleInfo
Note: There are maybe several “S-1-5-21-“ keys, so you need to select the one that contains subkey AnyoneRead\LocaleInfo.
  • Before you can edit this key, you need to give yourself the permission by right click on “LocaleInfo” then choose “Permissions…”
0304-1
  • In Permissions window, checking the box next to “Full control” line.
0304-2
  • Then you are good to go to next step. Now you can see there are many editable options, “TimeFormat” properties is what you need to change.
  • Double click “TimeFormat” to change its value. You need to understand the symbols below to customize your clock.
    • HH:mm – 24-hour format with the leading zero.
    • H:mm – 24-hour format without the leading zero.
    • hh:mm – 12-hour format with the leading zero.
    • h:mm – 12-hour format with the leading zero.
    • hh:mm tt – add “tt” to show a.m., p.m. sign.

0304-3
  • The most interesting part of this trick is that you can add anything you want before and after the “hh:mm tt” to make your clock different. For example, I change the value to “ ~*\_hh:mm_/*~” and you can see the result in the picture below.

[Windows 8] How to stop Windows Update from auto-restarting your computer or tablet

When working with Windows, you may be distracted with many dialogs and notifications. One of these notifications is Windows Update dialog that asks users to restart in order to finish updating. It wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t designed to repeat after a period of time then finally restart your computer or tablet automatically. In this article, I will show you how to stop Windows Update from restarting your computer or table automatically.

HOW TO PREVENT WINDOWS UPDATE FROM RESTARTING YOUR COMPUTER

To prevent Windows Update from restarting your computer, you should follow these steps.
  • Open “Settings Search” by pressing Windows + W hotkey (if on a tablet, swipe from the right edge of your screen, tap “Search”, and tap “Settings”).
  • Then you need to type “policy” and select the result “Edit group policy.”

  • In Local Group Policy Editor window, on the left side, you need to navigate to this location: Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update
  • On the right side, you have to double click/tap on the setting “No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates      installations.”
0323-1
  • In the new window, you just need to choose “Enabled” option to make this setting effect. Then click Apply button.

0323-2
  • Finally, you may want the change to make effect immediately by pressing Windows + R hotkey and type, “gpupdate /force” (without the quotes) then click OK.
0323-3
  • And you are good to go.

CONCLUSION

Enjoy!

[iPhone] Take sharper, better pictures with Camera Awesome

Most camera apps out there on the App Store are focused on providing cool filters. Sadly, not enough camera apps are focused on actually helping users take better, sharper photos. Camera Awesome is the best of both worlds: plenty of fun filters to play with, but also plenty of tools to better compose and “develop” your images.

What is it and what does it do

Main Functionality

Camera Awesome is like the Clorox 2 of iPhone camera apps: it makes your whites whiter, and your brights brighter. The app lets you shoot faster and take sharper, better-exposed shots. Professionals effects can also be added to your snapshots.
Pros
  • Share to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, SmugMug, Picasa, Photobucket and Flickr.
  • Features professionally designed special effects from renowned photographer Kevin Kubota
  • You can now use the volume button to take photos and video.
  • Improving contrast and brightness is as simple as tapping the “Awesomize” button
  • Easy to add frames to your photo creations
  • Tons of tools to help you better compose your photos
Cons
  • The app is free, but buying all the provided filters and presets will set you back almost $10
  • Slight delay when using the “Awesomize” slider bar, which makes it harder to select just the right level of “awesome” (aka brightness)
  • You only get 9 free presets to start with, some of which are VERY heavy are not suitable for everyday photography (However, these are augmented with additional filters and textures)
  • Loading your final photo through the Awesomizer can take 30 seconds or longer: it removes the immediacy from digital photography
Discussion

mzl.qfnoduuy.320x480-75

Camera apps are a dime a dozen, so it takes a lot to stand out from the crowd. Camera Awesome accomplishes this by having a whole host of filters, presets, and textures that users can add to make their photos pop. Some of them are subtle, while others are quite intense. You only get 9 free presets to start with, but you can purchase additional presets from within the app.
The navigation is a little complex, which I guess is sort of to be expected for an app with so many features. I do wish getting around was a bit more straightforward. However, one thing I can’t fault are the effects and composition guides themselves. If you want to actually take better pictures (as opposed to slapping a filter on a photo to make it passable), this is the app to use.
The Awesomizer is the main feature of the app, and it basically takes a good photo and makes it better through contrast and brightness adjustments. You can see an example of the tool at work in the top image above. The only down side is that your changes using Awesomizer aren’t instantaneous: there is a lot of waiting about while things load, which can be a drag.

Conclusion and download link

If you want to take better photos, Camera Awesome has the tools you need to edit photos, as well as the tools you need to take your photography to the next level. It may not have the most intuitive design, but it is a feature-rich app that is free to use. Shutterbugs, don’t miss out on this one!

[Android] Clean and optimize your smartphone or tablet with Clean Master

Temporary, surplus and leftover files can bog down any device, and that includes mobile phones. More advanced users know how to take care of these files of their own accord. Problem is, cleaning out everything can be somewhat of a pain. That’s why there are so many cache and data cleaning apps out there. Android is no exception to this rule, and there are tons of cleaning app in the Play Store. Clean Master is one such app which essentially provides all necessary cleaning and maintenance tools in a single user interface.

What is it and what does it do

Main Functionality

Clean Master is a file cleaning and optimization tool all packed into one app. Relatively speaking, it’s a lot like CCleaner for windows. It includes a history and privacy cleaner, a task killer/ RAM optimizer, and personal app manager. Most apps only offer one or two of these maintenance functions, while Clean Master is much more comprehensive in that respect.

Clean Master Settings
Pros
  • Comprehensive collection of cleaning tools
  • RAM optimizer/task killer
    • Scheduled cleaning process
  • App manager
  • Cache cleaner reminder
  • Responsive and clean user interface
  • Storage indicator (tells you how much is used or is free)
  • No advertisements
Cons
  • Nothing new to add to maintenance and cleaning (the tools can be found in a plethora of other apps)
  • The Task Killer is pretty much a placebo
    • When selecting apps you’re taken to the stock app manager
    • You have to force close background apps to gain free memory
  • App Manager is unnecessary
  • If you’re not careful, you can delete critical files with the ‘Residual Files’ cleaner
    • Detected personal videos
    • Detected local music files
Discussion
Clean Master Task Killer

The usefulness of an app like Clean Master is highly debatable. On one hand, cleaning up cache files and leftover junk from previous app installs can be beneficial. On the other hand, cleaning up the wrong files, and killing off apps all willy nilly can do more harm than good. It’s always important to be careful with software that promises to clean up your device. It’s definitely safer to manually cleanup the Android OS yourself, but that requires you to know what you’re doing.
Clean Master offers a selection of maintenance tools and file cleaners that are designed to improve your device’s performance. It’s much easier to list out the various tools, so that’s what I’m going to do.
  • History Cleaner
    • App Cache Cleaner- wipes the entire cache
    • Residual File Cleaner- cleans files labeled as unnecessary or junk
  • Privacy Cleaner- Checks for sensitive material like SMS, call logs, search history and passwords
  • Task Killer- Kills background apps and defrags RAM
  • App Manager- Uninstall and manage apps, backup app data
Without trying to sound too negative, Clean Master is pretty much like any other app cleaner or memory optimizer out there. Don’t take that to suggest it’s not worth downloading. If you’re well versed in technology though, you probably don’t need something like this to clean up storage and help your device perform better.

Clean Master Warning

I’m not going detail each tool individually because as I’ve said several times already, you probably understand what they do because they can all be found elsewhere.
It’s a great app, and the user interface is snappy and responsive. I know I usually obsess about the UI with most apps, but you’d be surprised how many developers out there overlook something so basic.
The tools work as you’d expect. The app cleaner wipes the cache, and it certainly does it efficiently. The Privacy cleaner scans for sensitive material and prompts you to remove what it uncovers. The App Manager allows you the option to uninstall apps, and backup related data. Everything is as it should be, and yet there are still a couple quirks.
The Residual File Cleaner does a thorough scan, but I would argue it’s almost too thorough. If you’re not paying attention and you just delete everything it finds, you may end up losing valuable data. For example, on my first scan it found all the personal videos I recorded with the camera, along with some local music files. They were clearly flagged because they are large in size. That doesn’t make them any less important to me, and I would have been quite upset if they had been deleted. If, by chance, someone isn’t paying attention, the results could be less than nominal.
Furthermore, it doesn’t seem like the Task Killer actually has an effect on performance. Sure, it kills running apps and then defrags RAM, but mere seconds later all of the apps are up and running again. Selecting a running app from the list, only brings you to the stock app page. If you navigate to the detailed app page in the Android settings and then choose “force close” it works much better than the Task Killer. That being said, the Task Killer is pretty much useless. I’m of mind that most task killers are worthless anyway. Feel free to weigh in on this argument in the comments below.

Conclusion and download link

Clean Master Privacy Wiper

If you’re not a tech savvy person, and you need a complete cleaning app then Clean Master is certainly for you. It offers a decent selection of maintenance tools all contained within one convenient app. If you’re the kind of person that already knows how to clean the app cache regularly, remove unnecessary files, cleanup leftovers and force close apps, then there’s absolutely no reason to download Clean Master.

How to: Recover a Locked and Disabled iPhone or iPad

HT1212--disabled_connect-001-en

Either through fat fingers, an errant Bluetooth keyboard, or a complete brain fart, sometimes we not only get the passcode to our device wrong, but we get completely locked out. Apple gives us 6 tries before you get a time-based cooling off period, but eventually if you keep trying (and failing) your device is disabled. What then? Well, the solutions are easy, but the most important thing is planning ahead to lessen the pain. Because all the solutions have a certain degree of “ouch” factor to them.
Apple has a support article on this very topic: iOS: Device disabled after entering wrong passcode. Which if you read the scenarios, well, you might be cursing a lot more. However, after I tell you how to get back to a usable device, I’ll tell you how to lessen the pain that the solution causes.

What Apple says to do

Let’s go through what Apple suggests you do (and the ramifications) first:

If you have synced the device with iTunes…

  1. Connect with iTunes (and you’ll probably get an error)
  2. Right-click on the device name (in iTunes 11 you’ll want to show the sidebar for this from the View menu) and choose Back Up
  3. When the back up is done, Restore
2013-01-12_10-53-05

Here’s the thing that bugs me about this (and all the solutions) it’s this line: “You may be able to reset the passcode by restoring the device.” (emphasis mine). May? Yikes.
Apple also says that if when you connect your device to iTunes and you’re prompted for the passcode…try another computer you synced with (which is strange, because you can only sync with one machine), otherwise you’ll have to try the “Never synced with iTunes” option (below).
Notes on this solution: If your backup wasn’t encrypted, then you’ll have to re-enter your passwords for accounts on your device. On the plus side, the passcode lock will be off. Also, I think you might be able to skip step to backup your device if you have a recent backup already. These notes assume (safely) that you might not have synced your device for a bit and maybe have things you don’t want to lose.

If you have never synced with iTunes…

I’ll tell you right now this is a rather nuclear option. It involves putting the device into Recovery Mode and wiping it out. Yep, you’ll be starting over. Yes, you can still download all your apps and music, but you’ll have to do it manually.
Okay the KB article shows that when you connect your device you’ll see this screen:
HT1212--itunes_alert-001-en
(Yikes!)
What you do to put your device into Recovery Mode is this.
  1. Unplug the sync cable from your device
  2. Turn off your device (hold the power button down, slide to power off)
  3. Press and hold the Home button and plug in the sync cable
  4. Don’t let go of the Home button until you see “Connect to iTunes”. When you see it, let go.
  5. Then iTunes will Restore the device (to factory). Which means you’ll have some work to do to get things back.
Notes on this solution: Yeah this is harsh. Don’t worry about your purchases. Apple knows what you’ve bought and you’ll be able to get your apps and music. If you use iTunes Match it will be pretty easy, but Apple also has a this support article on how to download your past purchases.

No computer in sight. Now what?

2013-01-12 09.22.49

Couple things here. First, you better hope you turned “Find My iPhone” on when you set up your device, because you’ll need that. Not just like “kinda need”, like “Obi Wan you’re our only hope” need.
Apple suggests to get to a computer and use iCloud.com or other iOS device that has the Find My iPhone app installed and use the “Erase Phone/iPad” option. Then they offer this helpful tidbit:
“If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode.”

Right, another, erase and start over option. Also with another “may work” caveat. We’re at triple “yikes” if you’re keeping count.
From all these solutions, you have probably gathered the key lessening the pain of the process is having a backup of your device—and the newer the better. How do you make sure your device is being backed up? Thought you’d never ask…

Lessen the pain with backups

There is a phrase that repeats over and over in the instructions, I’m sure you noticed, it’s “restore from backup”. Yeah, another subtle nag that you need to make sure you back up your device (and computer, btw) frequently. There are two ways to backup your device: iCloud and local. I’ll show you both options as well as the pros and cons of both.
It’s important to note that you can only pick one of the options: iCloud or local.

Back up through iTunes/Local backup

This is the simplest (and fastest) way to backup your device. When you connect your device to iTunes, on the main info screen scroll to the Backups section and click the radio button to Automatically backup to This Computer. If you chose the optional encryption then the passwords you have saved on your device will be saved too. However, and why I don’t choose this option, this is another password you have to remember. If you forget your backup password, you’re even more hooped (because it’s wipe and start over time).
2013-01-12_09-28-56

Down below you’ll notice I also pointed out the WiFi sync option. If this is turned on then your device will sync (and backup) to iTunes when:
  • iTunes is running on your host machine
  • The device is plugged in and charged/charging
  • It is connected to WiFi on the same network as the host computer
Important notes about this that I’ve found through using it (and why I typically keep it off):
  • If you forget to leave iTunes open, then it doesn’t sync or backup
  • It can be really, really slow
  • With the funky WiFi issues with iOS 6 (like devices not staying connected when locked), you might find you haven’t been syncing (or backing up) nearly as often as you thought.
If you don’t have a computer you can regularly backup to, then iCloud is your only choic. It’s also a “set and forget” option because iCloud backups are supposed to be automatically run while your device is charging.

iCloud backups

Apple gives everyone with an iCloud (aka iTunes aka Apple ID) account 5 GB of storage for free. Now, this doesn’t go too far, but it’s enough for the core stuff and a few extras. I have iCloud backups turned on for my iPad (since I consider it more like a work laptop than just a tablet), but since I haven’t (yet) opted to pay for more iCloud storage it’s the only device that is backed up to iCloud. My other two devices are backed up locally.
You can turn on iCloud backups through iTunes (see above) or through the iCloud section of settings.
Tap iCloud

2013-01-12 09.44.10
then Storage & Backup
2013-01-12 09.18.37
and turn iCloud backup on.
I’d tap “Back Up Now” if I were you, to make sure you have a backup up and ready, because iCloud backups only run when your iPad is:
  • plugged in
  • locked
  • connected to WiFi
Again, with the funky WiFi issues, it isn’t a bad idea to check once and a while to make sure your device really has been backing up when you think it has.
The trick to getting the most out of your 5 free gigs of storage is to manage the storage intelligently. There are two parts to this.
  1. What apps store to iCloud on their own
  2. What data you backup
I try to keep an eye on what other apps are stashing in iCloud and make sure that I clear out Keynote decks, Pages docs, and any other data that might be hogging space. On the backup side, I know that the core stuff is saved (it must just be a teeny tiny file really), so I only back up irreplaceable things (Camera roll and iRig recordings).

2013-01-12 09.48.19
2013-01-12 09.48.26
Am I considering jumping to 15 GB of storage (adding 10 GB) for $20 a year? Totally. That $20 would give me enough space to backup all my devices to iCloud.
2013-01-12 09.45.09

I know iCloud backups get a bad rap sometimes for being slow, but I’ve found them to be okay—if you don’t keep scads of data there. Over the holidays I used it to set up my mom’s new iPad 2 for her from her first generation iPad (had to sneak onto the iPad to make sure it backed up to iCloud so I could, but that was easy) and the process took a lot less time than I feared (less than an hour, probably only 30 minutes really). When I set up my fourth generation iPad from the iCloud back up of my third generation, again, not bad. Same goes for my wife migrating from her iPad 2 to my third generation iPad. So, yeah, I use iCloud backups and I’ve used them successfully.

Final thoughts

So now you know that if you get really, really locked out of your device (to the point of it being disabled) that, yep, the solutions aren’t pretty. The only thing you can do is plan ahead in case it does ever happen to you, and planning ahead is the same advice as always:
Back up your devices, early and often

How to: Create a Super Strong Device Passcode with Accented and Alternate Letters

Most of us have a device password set. You know a four digit passcode to keep folks out of your iPad or iPhone when you’re not looking. There are some of folks who don’t think 10,000 different combinations of digits is enough. Some folks turn off simple passcodes and switch to letters too. Want to step it up another notch? Then throw in some accented and alternate letters too.

I’m going to tell you straight off the bat that I don’t think this is the best idea ever. Setting a passcode is a great idea, and if you really want an extra step going beyond four numbers (remember there are 10,000 different combinations of 4 digit numbers) and turn off simple passcodes, go for it. But…

Remember if you forget your passcode, like completely space it, the only option is wiping and restoring. The more complex the passcode, the more likely you’ll forget it. Through in a slew of accented or alternate letters…well you can imagine the trouble you could get in.

But, since we’re here to give you tips and tricks you can use…

Step 1: Turn off Simple Passcodes

Just go to General -> Passcode Lock (you’ll be asked for your current passcode if you have one set) and then tap “Simple Passcode” to “OFF”.

Step 2: Set the new stronger passcode.

Once you turn Simple Passcodes off you’ll be asked to enter a new passcode. You’ll notice that the on screen keyboard pops up for this.
Tapping out lowercase and capital letters (and numbers, etc) you’ve got by now I expect, but accented letters or alternate characters you might not be familiar with. Getting to the letters is actually really easy, just tap and hold on a letter (like i in this example) and drag over to the character you want. Finish the new passcode, tap “Next” and re-enter the new über strong passcode. That’s it.

NewImage

Not all letters, of course, have accented versions or even alternates (l does by the way), but if you tap around you’ll find that a, s, e, y, u, i, o, z, c, l, and n all have characters you can use. Practice with Notepad to find and insert the characters as practice.

Wrap up

I think you can see why the note of caution. It can be tricky to enter these characters quickly. Oh and if you have a Bluetooth keyboard attached, yeah you might want to turn it off and type the code on screen to make 100% you’re tapping what you think you’re tapping.
Yes, this is an easy trick. Great way to make your iPad or iPhone really secure…just don’t forget how to type that passcode where tacotruck is now tåçøtrück or you’re going to be erasing your device and starting over from a backup.

How To Add Apps To Newsstand (Folder) Without Jailbreaking

What if I told you that it was possible to use the Newsstand as an app folder instead of hiding it? I’m not kidding, a reader of iDownloadblog has discovered a hack, which makes it possible to move apps in the Newsstand and the best part is that you can do it without jailbreaking your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

You have to follow these steps:

Step 1: Place the Newsstand folder anywhere on the second page of the Home screen.

Step 2: Place the apps that you would like to move into the Newsstand folder on the third page of the Home screen.

Step 3: Swipe to the third page of the Home screen containing the apps that you would like to move.

Step 4: Press the Home button once, and then immediately tap and hold on the app that you wish to move.

Step 5: Continue holding on the screen until the Home screen moves to the first page due to your press of the Home button.

Step 6: Release your hold on the screen and immediately swipe back to the second page containing the Newsstand folder

Step 7: If the trick worked correctly, then you should see wiggle mode enabled.

Step 8: Tap on the Newsstand folder to open it, and then press the Home button once to close it.

Step 9: You should see the app that you tapped and held on in Step 4 move into the Newsstand folder.

You can add an unlimited number of apps to the Newsstand folder, there doesn’t seem to be any limit. You can put a folder in the Newsstand folder using this process, but when you try to open the folder SpringBoard crashes, so avoid it.

While you can change the position of the apps in the Newsstand folder, it is also not possible to remove the app from the Newsstand folder. But if you want to undo the trick, all you need to do is reboot your iOS device.

It takes some practise, so don’t give up if it doesn’t work for you in the first few attempts. If you’ve trouble getting the trick to work then check out the video guide below:

How to Block Hotspot Shield Ads on Firefox

Hotspot Shield is an effective OpenVPN based privacy and security tool, used to encrypt your web browsing when at public hotspots and to circumvent web filters. On the other hand, while using this tool, users are plagued with persistent (and sometimes inappropriate) onslaught of ads built into the HSS monetization scheme. It's dubious enough that Anchorfree steals ad revenue from google adwords users by masking them with amazon ads, but HSS creates a massive box on the top of every page users surf to as well--completely vanquishing an incredible chunk of screen real-estate. Now, the problem is solved. No more ads.

Our solution to block Hotspot Shield Ads is to use Adblock Plus, a Firefox Add-on.

If you haven't installed Adblock Plus on your Firefox browser, first learn How to Block Ads on Firefox Using Adblock Plus.

Upon installing Adblock Plus and you still see ads on top of your page, just right-click on the ad and click on Adblock Plus: Block image or Adblock Plus: Block frame.
